HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL:
On Tuesday night, the Fairfield Mules Basketball team was at the Mule Barn for their home-opener in a Black Diamond Conference matchup with the Flora Wolves. After the Mules went up big on Flora early in the game, the Wolves were able to make a comeback early in the 2nd half, before the Mules pulled away to close out the game with a score of 54-48. The Mules were led in scoring by Jake Easton with 22 points, 17 of which came in the 2nd half. Owen Gruen and Breychan Kovacich also chipped in 10 points apiece. The Mules will be back in action again on Friday at the Mule Barn vs. Eldorado.

WAYNE CITY JR HIGH HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT:
The Wayne City Jr. High Holiday Tournament recently announced its All-Tournament Teams for Basketball and Cheerleading. For Basketball, All-Tournament Team members were: Jasper’s Kendall Diesel, Keaton Diesel, and Gavin Duffield; Wayne City’s Kaiden Gregory and Sam Talbert; Cisne’s Austin Ellis; Woodlawn’s Conner Blachly; Bluford’s Joaquin Easley; and NCOE’s Kallen Sutton and Timothy Garrett.
The All-Tournament Cheer Team member’s were: Fairfield’s Azlynn Scott; Jasper’s Paisley Wright; Cisne’s Khyia Smith; Wayne City’s Hannah Smith; Albion’s Audrina Bohannan; NCOE’s Gracie Day; Bluford’s Rendley Robertson; and Woodlawn’s Maya Pool.
The Wayne City Braves Cheer squad won the Cheerleading Competition with the Woodlawn Warriors Cheer team finishing 2nd.

The St. Louis Blues allowed three goals in the third period of a 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins at Enterprise Center. Robert Thomas tied the game at two early in the period before Boston’s Mark Kastelic responded with a go-ahead goal with 12 minutes left in regulation. Thomas scored twice in the losing effort. The Blues are tied for sixth place in the Central Division with 29 points. They visit the Predators tomorrow night.
The Chicago Blackhawks aim to avoid a third straight loss when they host the New York Rangers at United Center tonight. The Blackhawks are coming off a 7-1 road loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday. Chicago is in fifth place in the Central Division with 30 points. Tonight’s game starts at 6:30PM.

(Columbus, OH) — The number-13 Illinois Fighting Illini opened up conference play with an 88-80 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes at Value City Arena. The Illini led by just three with under a minute left in regulation before going on a 9-2 run to take control of the contest. Keaton Wagler poured in 23 points in the victory, while David Mirkovic chipped in with 22. Illinois improved to 1-and-0 in Big Ten play and 8-and-2 overall. The Illini host number-22 Nebraska on Saturday.

(Indianapolis, IN) — Quarterback Philip Rivers is coming out of retirement to sign with the Indianapolis Colts. Multiple reports say the 44-year-old grandfather has signed to the Colts’ practice squad as the team deals with injuries to all three of its quarterbacks. Rivers played his last game with the Colts in 2020. He is on the ballot for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, but will be removed once he is officially added to the Colts’ active roster. The oldest player to ever play in a NFL game was George Blanda, who suited up for the Raiders when he was 48-years-old.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Steelers are hoping to have their top playmaker back in the lineup for Week 15. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that he doesn’t anticipate wide receiver DK Metcalf’s availability for Monday’s game against the Dolphins to be in jeopardy. Metcalf was hospitalized and remained overnight in Baltimore after reporting stomach pains. Tomlin did mention that Metcalf could be unavailable for the early portions of the week from a practice standpoint.

(Buffalo, NY) — An arrest has been made in the shooting of New York Jets player Kris Boyd. Officials announced 20-year-old Fredrick Green was taken into custody on Monday in Buffalo and charged with attempted murder. Police have been searching for the suspect in the shooting since it happened November 16th. Boyd was shot after a fight broke out as he left a Manhattan nightclub with a group of friends and they were approached by a group of men. Doctors said Boyd had a bullet lodged in his pulmonary artery. Boyd has since been able to visit the team.

(Undated) — The New York Knicks and Orlando Magic have punched their tickets to the NBA Cup semifinals. New York toppled the Toronto Raptors 117-101 in a quarterfinal matchup at Scotiabank Arena. Jalen Brunson came up big with a game-high 35 points and recorded his 16th game with at least six three-pointers for the Knicks. He surpassed Julius Randle for the second most in team history with the feat. In the other East quarterfinal, the Orlando Magic beat the Miami Heat 117-108 at the Kia Center. Desmond Bane erupted for 37 points to help the Magic advance. The Knicks and Magic will now go head-to-head in the semifinals on Saturday in Las Vegas. The Cup quarterfinals continue on Wednesday when the Suns take on the Thunder and the Spurs visit the Lakers.

(Philadelphia, PA) — The Phillies are bringing back their top slugger. According to ESPN, the Phils are finalizing a five-year, 150-million-dollar contract with designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. The 32-year-old finished second in the NL in MVP voting after leading the league with 56 home runs and 132 RBIs in 2025. The Mets, Red Sox, Orioles, Pirates and Reds were also interested in Schwarber.

(St. Louis, MO) — The St. Louis Cardinals have dropped in the MLB Draft lottery for the second time in three years. The Cardinals will have the 13th overall pick in the 2026 draft. St. Louis had the eighth best odds to land the top pick in the draft heading into yesterday’s lottery. The 2026 MLB Draft will be held this July.

(Orlando, FL) — The Chicago White Sox took home the top prize at the Major League Baseball draft lottery and will select first overall this summer. This is the first time the team has held the top pick since selecting Hall of Fame outfielder Harold Baines in 1977, and just the third time ever. The Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals round out the lottery. The draft will be held July 11th and 12th in Philadelphia as part of the All-Star Game festivities.

(Orlando, FL) — Major League Baseball’s offseason heated up on Tuesday at the Winter Meetings. The day began with a report the Phillies re-signing Kyle Schwarber to a five-year, $150 million contract. Schwarber led the National League with 56 home runs and 132 RBIs this past season and finished second in MVP voting. The Dodgers will reportedly sign closer Edwin Diaz to a three-year, $69 million contract. In other news, the Chicago White Sox won the draft lottery and will pick first in next summer’s draft. The Rays, Twins, Giants, Pirates and Royals round out the lottery. On Wednesday, the Rule 5 Draft will be held. Teams are able to select players that have not been placed on 40-man rosters by other teams.

(Los Angeles, CA) — The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly adding to their bullpen with former Mets’ closer Edwin Diaz. Diaz had two years and 38-million dollars remaining on his five-year contract with the Mets, but opted out. Diaz converted 28 out of 31 saves last season, finishing with a one-point-six-three ERA. The 31-year-old is a three-time all-star. The deal is reportedly for three years and worth 69-million dollars.

(Undated) — The Angels are acquiring a former top prospect in a trade with the Red Sox. Boston is sending infielder Vaughn Grissom to Los Angeles in exchange for outfield prospect Isaiah Jackson. The 24-year-old Grissom was acquired by the Red Sox in the December 2023 trade that sent Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves. He spent the entire 2025 season in Triple-A after appearing in 31 big league games in 2024. Grissom will compete with second-base prospect Christian Moore and utility infielder Oswaldo Peraza for playing time.

(Tampa, FL) — Former Tampa Rays shortstop Wander Franco is getting a new trial after being convicted of sexual abuse on a minor. He was given a to a two-year suspended prison sentence after being convicted in June in the Dominican Republic. While Franco was appealing his decision, prosecutors were working to increase the sentence to five years. He’s accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl in the Dominican Republic when he was 21. The girl’s mother was also granted a new trial after she was sentenced to ten years in prison for sexual exploitation and money laundering.

(South Bend, IN) — Notre Dame is not planning to let head football coach Marcus Freeman walk away from the program any time soon. Fighting Irish athletic director Pete Bevacqua told reporters that he is aware of potential NFL interest surrounding Freeman, but will push to retain the 39-year-old and make him one of college football’s highest-paid coaches. Freeman is 43-and-12 across his first three seasons as Notre Dame’s coach and led the team to the national title game last season. He is reportedly set to garner interest from the New York Giants and other potential NFL job openings this offseason. The coach agreed to a four-year contract extension last December that runs through the 2030 season.
