William L. Shelton, 90, formerly of Fairfield passed away Thursday, December 11th 2025 at Villas of Hollybrook in Bethalto, IL.
Born June 17, 1935 in Wayne County, IL. He was the son of Harry and Leone Shelton, and brother to David Shelton, who all predeceased him. He married Janis Conard in 1958 and she passed in April of this year.
They traveled extensively when he was in the Air Force for 20 years. Bill served solo tours in Guam and Iceland, and his family joined him in France, Germany and the Philippines as well as stateside. While serving in the military he started the Christian Military Fellowship which matched service people all over the world with other Christians and churches where they were stationed. Bill and Janis made many friends during his ministry of 46 years serving in Illinois towns of Greenville, St. Elmo, Louisville, Enfield, McLeansboro and just outside Cisne. He sang with the Preachers Quartet and did revivals at many churches in the area. He served with the Wayne County Ambulance Service, Rides and Fuji Film pickup and deliveries for many years.
He was also a loving father to Teresa (Rusty) Hutchens of Brighton, IL, Wayne (Alice) Shelton of Bethalto, IL, Mark (Katy) Shelton of Dix, IL, John (Chantel) Shelton of Fairfield, IL and Doug (Victoria) Shelton of Evansville, IN. He was grandfather to 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Raymond Shelton of Fairfield, IL and many other relatives and friends.
Services for William L. Shelton will be held 12:00 p.m. (noon), Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025 at the Buckeye Christian Church. Visitation will be Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. to service time at the Buckeye Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Buckeye Cemetery.
