Dozens of infants across the United States may have contracted botulism after being exposed to tainted ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula, according to the Food and Drug Administration. As of last Wednesday, at least 51 infants in 19 states have suspected or confirmed cases of botulism linked to the formula.
Federal health officials report that the affected ByHeart products may have been contaminated as far back as March 2022. Last month, the company announced a voluntary recall of the formula, which was distributed nationwide and internationally through both online and retail sales.
Families of infants who have become ill are now suing the company. The FDA urges parents and caregivers to check for recalled products and consult with healthcare providers if they have concerns about possible exposure.
