Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologists are collecting live Christmas trees after the holidays to be reused as fish habitat in local lakes.
The trees will be bundled, weighted and submerged to create shelter for multiple fish species while also promoting algae growth that attracts insects and fish for anglers. Over time, the trees will naturally decompose.
Residents are reminded that trees must be free of stands, lights, ornaments and tinsel. Wreaths and garlands will not be accepted. Trees should only be dropped off at designated locations and during approved dates.
Local drop-off sites include:
Marion County: Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area, December 27 through January 18. Trees should be placed in the designated area near the boat ramp.
Wayne County: Sam Dale State Fish and Wildlife Area, December 27 through January 18. Trees should be placed in the designated area near the boat ramp.
Maps and habitat coordinates are available through the IDNR Office of Fisheries website or from area fisheries biologists.
