One person has died following a house fire Sunday night in Mount Vernon.
Firefighters were dispatched at 8:29 p.m. to a residence in the 900 block of Pace Avenue, north of Optimist Park. Crews with the Mount Vernon Fire Department arrived on scene and made forcible entry into the home, where a male resident was located and removed from the structure.
Jefferson County Coroner, Roger Hayse responded to the scene and pronounced the victim, deceased.
The fire caused extensive damage to the home, including a collapsed roof and heavy fire damage to the attic area.
The Mount Vernon Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Jefferson County Fire Protection District, while the Kell Fire Department provided station coverage in case of other calls in the area.
The incident remains under investigation by the Mount Vernon Fire Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.
