IDENTITY RELEASED IN FATAL MT. VERNON HOUSE FIRE

Authorities have released the name of the man who died following a house fire Sunday night in Mt. Vernon.

The victim has been identified as 64-year-old Robert Verhines, a disabled resident of Mt. Vernon.

Firefighters were dispatched at 8:29 p.m. to a residence in the 900 block of Pace Avenue, north of Optimist Park. Crews with the Mount Vernon Fire Department arrived on scene and made forcible entry into the home, where Verhines was located and removed from the structure. A neighbor informed firefighters that the occupant was still inside the residence.

Verhines was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
