Pomeroy Elzie Tomberlin, age 78, died and entered into his eternal rest at on Saturday morning, January 10, 2026, at Fairfield Senior Living and Rehabilitation in Fairfield, Illinois.
Pomeroy was born on February 16, 1947, in Alma, Georgia, to Bennie and Mary Cecil (Stone) Tomberlin. He married young, worked extremely hard, began a family, and along the way, came to faith in Jesus Christ. His was a faith that he earnestly sought to live out and share with others. He seldom met a stranger and made many friends as a route truck driver in the Jacksonville, Florida area.
Together with his former wife, Barbara Bennett, of forty-three years, Pomeroy nurtured and raised four sons who survive: Bennie (Sheila) Tomberlin of Fairfield, IL, Dave (Karen) Tomberlin and Michael (Lauren) Tomberlin both of Hilliard, FL, and Jerry Tomberlin of Baxley, GA. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister Judy Vancleave of Baxley, GA.
Pomeroy was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and a very special granddaughter whose memory even cognitive loss could not erase.
The family would like to thank the staff, custodians, nurses, and CNAs of Wabash & Fairfield Senior Living and Rehabilitation in both Carmi and Fairfield locations. Also a thank you to the SSM Health at Home-Hospice team for the exceptional care given to “Pom” across these seven years.
There will be no local services in Fairfield. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, January 20th, at the Tomberlin Cemetery in Surrency, GA. A visitation will be held from 10:15am until the time of service at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Tomberlin Cemetery Fund, 298 Tomberlin Cemetery Rd, Surrency, GA, 31563. The Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home is assisting with shipping arrangements, while the Nobles Funeral Home in Baxley, GA is assisting with service arrangements.
