NEW POSTAL RULES MAY IMPACT MAIL-IN VOTING IN ILLINOIS, CLERKS WARN

Illinois county clerks caution that recent postal changes could disrupt mail-in voting for the 2026 election. Due to new postmarking and transportation rules, voters are advised to mail ballots at least a week before Election Day.

A rule effective December 24th means postmarks may not reflect when mail is received by the Postal Service, creating uncertainty for ballot deadlines. Ballots are now processed at different distribution centers, potentially causing delays, and will no longer be considered priority mail.

Clerks are urging early mailing and are using voter education efforts to spread the word. These changes could affect vote counts and even election outcomes. For added assurance, voters can request a manual postmark or drop off ballots in person.
