The Fairfield Mules JV Wrestling squad competed Saturday at the Carmi JV Tournament and had several wrestlers place and earn medalist honors. They were: Corbyn Griffith-1st Place (5-0), Braxton Marshel-2nd Place (4-1), Carter Johnson-2nd Place (2-1), Aaron Allums-3rd Place (2-2), Braxton Kirk-4th Place (2-3), Grayson Oleson-4th Place (2-3), Laythan Craft-4th Place (2-2).

HIGH SCHOOL AND JR. HIGH COMPETITION CHEERLEADING:
CARMI CHEERING FOR A CURE:
The FCHS Competition Cheerleaders competed on Saturday at the Carmi Cheering for a Cure Event and placed 2nd in the Medium Varsity Division. The Cisne Middle School Cheerleaders also competed in the event and placed 2nd in the Jr. High Small Squad Category.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL:
The FCHS Lady Mules Basketball team was in action on Saturday on the road versus Mt. Vernon, IN. Fairfield came away with a 43-27 victory. The Lady Mules will be back in action today versus West Frankfort at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic.

The St. Louis Blues couldn’t get the puck past Connor Ingram during a 5-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. St. Louis surrendered three goals in the first period and trailed the rest of the way. Jordan Binnington saved just 23 of the 28 shots that he faced. The Blues are tied for sixth place in the Central Division with 46 points. They visit the Jets tomorrow night.

The Chicago Blackhawks collapsed in the final two periods during a 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins at United Center on Saturday. Ryan Greene and Wyatt Kaiser each scored in the first period to give Chicago an early 2-0 lead, but the Hawks surrendered three goals in the second and two in the third. Chicago is in seventh place in the Central Division with 45 points. The Blackhawks host Winnipeg tonight.

Illini Take Down Minnesota

(Champaign, IL) — The number-13 Illinois Fighting Illini are on a seven-game winning streak following a 77-67 win over the Minnesota Gophers at State Farm Center on Saturday. The game was tied at halftime before the Illini outscored Minnesota 43-33 the rest of the way. Zvonimir Ivisic poured in 18 points off the bench, while Keaton Wagler finished with 17. Illinois is 6-and-1 in Big Ten play and 15-and-3 overall. The Illini host Maryland on Wednesday.

However, the scenario is unlikely after Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach last week. The 42-year-old didn’t commit to retirement in the aftermath of Pittsburgh’s Wild Card loss to Houston. Rodgers threw 24 touchdowns to seven interceptions in the regular season.

Ryan Gerard finished in second at 14 under. Patrick Rodgers rounded out the top three at 13 under. Defending champion Nick Taylor finished tied for 13th with five others at nine under par.

(Melbourne) — The opening day of the Australian Open is officially in the books. Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz, sixth-seeded Alex De Minaur and 10th-seeded Alexander Bublik are advancing to the second round after straight sets victories. Seventh-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime was upset by Nuno Borges in his first round matchup. American and 19th-seeded Tommy Paul also collected a first round victory.
