Humane Society officials in Southern Illinois are reminding residents to take extra precautions with pets during extreme cold weather.
Franklin County Animal Control says a dog was recently found dead outdoors during dangerously low temperatures — a tragedy the agency calls preventable. Officials say the dog appeared to have once been part of a family and was wearing a blue collar, suggesting it had been cared for before the incident.
In a statement, Franklin County Animal Control called it “a heartbreaking scene” and a reminder of the need for compassion and vigilance, adding that no animal should be left outside for more than 15 minutes in these temperatures.
Officials are also urging the public to act: if you see an animal left outside in unsafe conditions, report it to your local Humane Society— saying every animal deserves warmth and care, and each community can make a difference.
