The Illinois Attorney General’s Office is warning consumers about possible winter utility scams.
Officials say scammers are posing as utility company representatives — threatening to shut off heating service unless an immediate payment is made.
The Attorney General’s Office advises residents to ask for identification from anyone claiming to represent a utility company. They also recommend verifying the claim by calling your utility provider directly using the official phone number on your bill or the company’s website — not a number provided by the person at your door or on a suspicious call.
If you believe you’ve been targeted, report it to your utility company and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.
