The FCHS Mules Wrestlers were in action on Monday at the Carmi Varsity Invitational and had several wrestlers pick up victories and one wrestler finish with medal honors. Carter Poole had 2 Pinfalls and finished 2nd in the 106 lb. weight class. Other wrestlers picking up wins were Lane Witucki – Technical Fall, Vance Vanway – Decision (6-0), Grant Jennette – 2 Pinfalls, and Braxton Marshel – Pinfall. The Mules grapplers will be back in action on Wednesday at the Mule Barn for Senior Night.

CARMI-WHITE COUNTY INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT:
On Monday night, the Fairfield Mules Boys Basketball team took on the Harrisburg Bulldogs at the Carmi-White County Invitational Tournament. After a back-and-forth contest, the Mules took the win 50-48 in Overtime after a layup from Breychan Kovacich with 2.4 seconds left. The Mules were led in scoring by Jake Easton with 15 points and Owen Gruen with 14. Fairfield will be back in action on Wednesday at the CWCIT versus Carmi-White County.

The Lady Mules Basketball team was in action on Monday versus the host West Frankfort at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic. The Lady Mules led for most of the game before putting away the Lady Redbirds by a score of 42-32. Fairfield was led in scoring by Riley Jolly with 11 points. The Lady Mules will play their second game of the tournament on Wednesday against Herrin.

Indiana Edges Miami To Earn First Natty In School History
>>(Miami, FL) — A first-time National Champion has been crowned. The Hoosiers took down the Hurricanes 27-21 in the College Football Playoff title game from Miami. Fernando Mendoza dove for a key rushing touchdown to make it a two-score game in the fourth quarter. Top-ranked Indiana finished a perfect, 16-and-0 on the season. Mark Fletcher Jr. scored twice on the ground for Number-10 Miami, which ended the year 13-and-3.

(Buffalo, NY) — The Buffalo Bills are firing head coach Sean McDermott. In a statement, the team said McDermott helped changed the organization’s mindset and was instrumental in turning the Bills into a perennial playoff team. McDermott had been head coach of the Bills since 2017 and made the playoffs every season besides 2018. He had a record of 98 and 50 with the team. It comes after the Bills lost to the Denver Broncos in overtime on Saturday and were eliminated from the playoffs.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Cubs are adding to their bullpen. The Northsiders signed reliever Trent Thornton to a contract for the 2026 season yesterday. Thornton spent the last two-and-a-half seasons with the Seattle Mariners. The 32-year-old went 2-and-0 with a 4.68 ERA in 33 appearances last year.

Hafley coached Boston College to a 22-and-26 record over four seasons before joining the Packers.

(Englewood, CO) — The Broncos are hoping to have a key member of their offense back for the AFC Championship Game. Denver opened the practice window for running back J.K. Dobbins to potentially return to game action against the New England Patriots on Sunday. Dobbins was Denver’s leading rusher during the regular season, racking up 772 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games played. The 27-year-old has been on injured reserve since suffering a foot injury in the team’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 10.

Multiple sources are reporting that Kansas City is planning to hire Eric Bienemy as the team’s new offensive coordinator. He will replace Matt Nagy, whose contract expired at the end of the season and is currently interviewing for head coaching vacancies. Bienemy was the team’s OC from 2018-to-2022 and left to call the offensive plays for the Washington Commanders in 2023. He served as the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears this past season. NFL Network reports that the Chiefs are also hiring Chad O’Shea as their wide receivers coach.

(Inglewood, CA) — The starters for this season’s NBA All-Star game have been announced. The Eastern Conference starters include Gianns Antetokounmpo [[ YAHN-iss ah-dedo-KOON-bo ]], Jalen Brunson, Cade Cunningham, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown. The Western Conference starters are Steph Curry, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic [[ ni-KOLA yo-kitch ]] and Victor Wembanyama. The rest of the All-Stars will be announced next week. This year’s format for the game is USA vs. the World, which will see players broken up into three teams to compete in a round-robin style tournament. The 75th NBA All-Star game takes place on Feberary 15th in Inglewood, California.

(Undated) — The latest men’s college basketball coaches poll has been released. Arizona is once again sitting atop the rest of the nation. The Wildcats are followed by Michigan, UConn, Purdue, and Duke to round out the remainder of the top five. Illinois is ranked number 11, Saint Louis is number 23 and St. John’s is 25th after not being included in last week’s poll. Iowa and Utah State are the two schools that dropped out of the top 25.

Fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic recorded his 100th career win at the tournament with a straight sets takedown of Pedro Martinez. The 10-time tournament champion also equaled two records by starting his 21st Aussie Open and his 81st Grand Slam event. In other men’s action, fifth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti and eighth-seeded American Ben Shelton were victorious and will be advancing to the second round.
