The Fairfield Mules Competition Cheerleading Squad competed at the Carterville Cheer Invitational on Friday. The Mules competed in the Traditional Routine 1A Small Varsity Division but did not place. However, they did have their best run on the mat and their best score of the season.

The Chicago Bulls hit a late shot to beat the Boston Celtics 114-111 at United Center on Saturday. Kevin Huerter hit a game-winning three with under a second left in regulation. Coby White led the way with 22 points. Chicago is in ninth place in the Eastern Conference at 23-and-22. The Bulls host the Lakers tonight.

The Chicago Blackhawks surrendered four goals in the third period during a 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers at United Center. Tyler Bertuzzi scored Chicago’s only goal in the losing effort. The Hawks are in sixth place in the Central Division with 50 points. They visit the Minnesota Wild tomorrow night.

The St. Louis Blues picked up a point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings at Enterprise Center on Saturday. Jordan Kyrou scored the game-tying goal with about two minutes left in regulation before the Blues fell 2-1 in a four-round shootout. Kyrou scored twice in the losing effort while Dalibor Dvorsky and Brayden Schenn also lit the lamp. The Blues are in last place in the Central Division with 47 points. They host the Stars tomorrow.

(West Lafayette, IN) — The number-11 Illinois Fighting Illini are on a nine-game winning streak after knocking off number-four Purdue 88-82 at Mackey Arena on Saturday. The Illini outscored Purdue 49-39 in the second half. Keaton Wagler poured in 46 points in the victory. Illinois improved to 8-and-1 in Big Ten play and 17-and-3 overall. The Illini host Washington on Thursday.

(Undated) — Super Bowl 60 is set. The Patriots will battle the Seahawks from Santa Clara on February 8th. The Pats outlasted the Broncos 10-7 in a snowy AFC Championship game from Denver to advance. Christian Gonzalez picked-off Jarrett Stidham late to seal the win as New England won its first postseason game at Mile High in franchise history and secured an NFL-best 12th Super Bowl appearance. Over in the NFC, the Seahawks took down the Rams 31-27 from Seattle. Sam Darnold threw for almost 350 yards to go with three touchdowns as the Hawks are in the big game for the first time since falling to New England in Super Bowl 49.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — A homecoming of sorts is taking place in Pittsburgh. The Steelers reached an agreement with Mike McCarthy on Saturday to become the team’s next head coach. Contract details are still being worked out. The Steel City native didn’t coach this season after leaving the Cowboys without an extension last year. McCarthy replaces Mike Tomlin, who stepped down after coaching Pittsburgh for 19 seasons.

(East Rutherford, NJ) — The Giants have added to their coaching staff. According to ESPN, Big Blue is hiring Dennard Wilson as their defensive coordinator. Former Ravens special teams coordinator Chris Horton is also expected to be hired for the same role on John Harbaugh’s staff. Wilson spent the previous two seasons as the DC for the Titans, after he was Baltimore’s defensive backs coach in 2023. He previously interviewed for the Giants’ defensive coordinator job after the 2023 season.

(Columbus, OH) — Ohio State is dipping into the NFL ranks for its next offensive coordinator. ESPN reports the school is hiring Arthur Smith for the role. He spent the past two seasons with the Steelers in the same position before head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down this year. Smith oversaw an offense that ranked 15th in points scored with more than 23 per game. He replaces Brian Hartline, who took the head coaching gig at South Florida.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The union that represents NBA players has released a statement supporting protesters in Minnesota. The NBA Players Association says “we must defend the right to freedom of speech and stand in solidarity with the people in Minnesota protesting and risking their lives to demand justice.” The NBA postponed Saturday’s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors at the Target Center in Minneapolis after Saturday’s fatal shooting of Alex Pretti. The VA nurse, a U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis.

(Cleveland, OH) — The Guardians are rewarding their star player. ESPN reports Jose Ramirez agreed to a seven-year, 175-million-dollar contract on Saturday. The 33-year-old third baseman was already signed through 2028, but the new deal includes a no trade clause along with performance bonuses. Ramirez finished third in AL MVP voting last year after hitting .283 with 30 homers and 85 RBIs.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago White Sox bolstered their bullpen over the weekend. The Southsiders signed Seranthony Dominguez to a two-year deal worth 20-million dollars on Friday. Dominguez split last season between the Orioles and Blue Jays. He went 4-and-4 with a 3.16 ERA and two saves in 67 appearances in 2025.

(La Quinta, CA) — The world’s greatest golfer is back on top. Scottie Scheffler is celebrating his 20th career Tour victory after winning the American Express at La Quinta Country Club. Scheffler finished atop the leaderboard by four strokes after shooting 27 under par. He is the first player since Tiger Woods to reach 20 wins prior to turning 30 years old. Jason Day, Ryan Gerard, Andrew Putnam, and Matt McCarty finished in a four-way tie for second at 23 under.

(Melbourne) — The Australian Open is heating up. Fifth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti took down ninth-seeded American Taylor Fritz in straight sets to punch his ticket into the quarterfinal round. Sixth-seeded Alex De Minaur also took down 10th-seeded Alexander Bublik in straight sets. Novak Djokovic will advance to the quarterfinals after his opponent Jakub Mensik withdrew due to an abdominal injury. On the women’s side, fourth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova beat Wang Xinyu in straight sets and sixth-seeded Jessica Pegula defeated ninth-seeded and defending tournament champion Madison Keys.
