MULTI-VEHICLE ACCIDENT CLOSES I-57 SOUTHBOUND NEAR MT. VERNON FOR SEVERAL HOURS

A multi-vehicle accident on Sunday afternoon led to the closure of southbound I-57 near Mt. Vernon at the I-64 interchange for several hours. The incident occurred near milepost 92 in Jefferson County at approximately 2:47 p.m. on January 25th.

According to Illinois State Police Troop 10, the pileup involved around seven vehicles, including a jackknifed truck tractor semi-trailer. Traffic was diverted off I-57 at exit 94 (Veterans Memorial Drive) while emergency crews responded to the scene.

The southbound lanes remained closed until approximately 6:30 p.m. Minor injuries were reported, and Illinois State Police continue to investigate the accident.
