ARCTIC BLAST TO BRING DANGEROUS COLD TO MIDWEST THIS WEEK

By Mark Wells Jan 28, 2026 | 5:59 AM

The National Weather Service is forecasting a stretch of dry but bitterly cold weather for the Midwest, with temperatures staying well below normal for late January. Sunshine returns today, but highs are only expected to reach the mid-20s.

Clouds will increase Wednesday night into Thursday, but the region is expected to remain largely dry, with minimal chances for any precipitation over the next seven days.

The most significant change comes late in the week as another arctic air mass plunges south into the area. By Friday, temperatures will struggle to climb out of the upper teens, and brisk north winds will make it feel even colder. Wind chills Friday morning could reach levels that prompt Cold Weather Advisories, and even colder conditions are possible early Saturday. In some areas, wind chills may approach criteria for an Extreme Cold Warning, especially overnight and into the early morning hours.

While snow is not expected to be a concern, forecasters warn that this kind of cold can be dangerous. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors late in the week, dress in layers, and take steps to protect pets and pipes from the frigid temperatures.

Meteorologists say they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the coldest weather approaches.
