James David Cross, 47, of Dahlgren, IL passed away on February 1, 2026 at Belle Rive, IL. James was born July 2, 1978 in Sycamore, IL to David & Debbie (Clark) Cross. James worked in the oil fields for several years, and had also worked as a coal miner and as a contractor in the construction business.
James was known as a “go-getter” and was also known for his willingness to help others, even if it meant giving to others before himself. He was known for being a good person who tried to help everyone he could. He was a godly man and he enjoyed the outdoors. He liked riding motorcycles, and he loved watching beautiful sunsets. Music spoke to his soul, and he enjoyed playing guitar and harmonica.
James is survived by his mother Debbie Cross of Dahlgren; his sister Tonya Cross & significant other Kaleb Braden of Dahlgren; 2 sons: Cody Barnett & significant other Kendra Brown of Thackeray, IL and Trenton Cross & wife Kaylee of Thackeray; 3 grandchildren: Lane, Creo, and Chloe Barnett – all of Thackeray; his grandma Brenda Clark of Arkansas; his niece Destiny Braden of Dahlgren, and his nephew Jacob Braden of Dahlgren.
He was preceded in death by his father David Cross; his grandpa & grandma Wayne & Estelle Cross, and his grandpa Cecil Clark.
Funeral services for James David Cross will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren, IL with Bro. Mark Tate officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 noon at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren. In accordance with his wishes, James’ body will be cremated and a Celebration of Life with burial of ashes will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gholson Funeral Home to assist with final expenses.
