The National Weather Service reports a warming trend underway across Southern Illinois bringing unseasonably mild weather to the region through the early part of the week.
Today (Monday), residents can expect mostly sunny skies, with afternoon highs climbing into the mid 40s to mid 50s in some areas. These temperatures mark a significant departure from the region’s typical conditions for this time of year.
The warmth is set to intensify tomorrow (Tuesday), when temperatures across the Tri-State area are forecast to reach the uppers 50s to mid-60s, well above seasonal averages. However, a cold front is expected to move through Tuesday night, bringing a chance of showers, mainly impacting southern parts of the region. Rainfall amounts are expected to be light, with totals generally less than a quarter of an inch. Any precipitation should taper off by Wednesday morning.
Looking ahead, forecasters note some uncertainty in weather models after Wednesday, but temperatures are projected to remain above average for the rest of the week. The possibility of scattered showers later in the week will continue to be monitored.
