AREA SPORTS RESULTS FROM WEDNESDAY:
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL:
The Fairfield Lady Mules Basketball team traveled to Flora Wednesday night for their regular season finale against the Wolfgals. Fairfield’s JV squad started the night off with an impressive 42-19 win against Flora. The Lady Mules were led in scoring by Gracyn Vaughan with 8 points. The Lady Mules Varsity team followed that up with their own dominant performance beating the Flora Wolfgals 64-31. Fairfield’s Bentli Belva and Riley Jolly led the team in scoring with 12 points apiece. The Lady Mules finished their regular season with a record of 19-10 and 7-3 in the Black Diamond Conference. Fairfield will kick off its postseason journey on Monday night, February 16th, at the Mt. Carmel Regional versus Salem at 7:30 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL:
Marlow passes 3000th Career Point Mark
Webber 84, Edwards County 51

Webber Senior Nathaniel Marlow needed 46 points coming into Wednesday night’s game against Edwards County to reach 3,000 points. On what was Webber’s Senior Night, Marlow poured in 51 points, matching Edwards County’s point total for the whole game, as Webber defeated the Lions 84-51. Marlow now has scored 3,005 points in his high school career, making him just the 7th boys basketball player in IHSA history to achieve that milestone.

Marlow is now just 28 points behind Joe Aden of Dongola for 6th All-Time, and only 29 points behind John Scheyer of Glenbrook North, who is 5th All-Time. Scheyer is the current Head Basketball Coach at Duke University. Marlow is also just 43 points away from catching Ross Roberton of South Beloit, who sits at #4 All-Time with 3,048 career points.

Rob Dillingham had 16 points and seven assists off the bench for Chicago, which is in 11th place in the Eastern Conference at 24-and-31. The Bulls host the Raptors on February 19th.

>>Cardinals Begin Spring Training

(Jupiter, FL) — The St. Louis Cardinals begin their 2026 season today. Pitchers and catchers are expected to report to Spring Training in Jupiter, Florida, by the end of the day. The Cardinals are coming off a rough 2025 season, going just 78-and-84 and missing out on the playoffs for the third season in a row. The club will begin full-team workouts on Monday.

>>Cubs Give Palencia Closer’s Role

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Cubs have officially named their closing pitcher. The club announced that Daniel Palencia will begin the 2026 season as its closer. Palencia took over the role after Ryan Pressly lost it at the beginning of last season. He went 1-and-6 with a 2.91 ERA and 22 saves in 54 appearances in 2025.

>>Colts Hire New D-Line Coach

(Indianapolis, IN) — The Indianapolis Colts are make some changes on their coaching staff. The team hired Marion Hobby as its defensive line coach yesterday. Hobby coached under Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo in Cincinnati from 2021 until 2024. He spent last season in the college ranks as a defensive analyst at Tennessee.

(East Rutherford, NJ) — The Giants are adding a former head coach to their squad. ESPN reports Brian Callahan is joining John Harbaugh’s staff as a quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. He was fired by the Titans back in October after going 4-and-19 over the past two years. Callahan will now work with Jaxson Dart, who’s heading into his second season as New York’s quarterback.

>>Former Jets Player Held In Jail On Murder Charge

(East Rutherford, NJ) — A former Jets player is behind bars. Darron Lee is being held without bond after he was charged with first-degree murder. Police say the first-round draft pick is accused of committing blunt force trauma homicide against his girlfriend earlier this month. However, an autopsy hasn’t been released yet. Lee has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 9th.

>>NBA Hands Down Punishments Following Fight Between Hornets, Pistons

(Undated) — The NBA is handing down its punishments to four players following a fight between the Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons during their game Tuesday. Detroit center Isaiah Stewart has been suspended for seven games, Charlotte forwards Miles Bridges and Moussa Diabate [[ moose-ah dee-ah-bah-tay ]] were each suspended four games, and Pistons center Jalen Duren got two games. The suspensions begin immediately after all four were ejected during the third quarter of Detroit’s 110-104 win.

>>Dodgers Sign Evan Phillips To One-Year Deal

(Undated) — The Dodgers are bringing back a member of their bullpen on a new deal. Los Angeles is signing right-handed reliever Evan Phillips to a one-year, 6.5-million-dollar contract. Phillips is coming off Tommy John surgery and is expected to return around July. The 31-year-old was limited to seven appearances last season, and did not allow a single run through five-plus innings of action. He did not play again after being placed on the injured list on May 7th because of what the team called forearm discomfort.

(Milan) — Team USA picked up five more medals at the Winter Olympics on Wednesday and is now just one off the lead. The U.S. is up to 12 total medals including four gold. Norway and Italy lead all countries with 13 medals each. Norway also has a Games-best seven gold. Nine more medal events are scheduled for Thursday, including the women’s Super-G, men’s moguls, and the women’s snowboard halfpipe.

>>U.S. Men’s Hockey Begins Olympic Run Today

(Milan) — The U.S. men’s hockey team is ready to make its Milan Olympics debut. Team USA will square off with Latvia today in their preliminary round opener. With the return of NHL players for the first time in 12 years, Team USA is poised to get back to the podium after finishing fifth four years ago in Beijing. The U.S. hasn’t medaled since winning the silver in Vancouver in 2010. Team USA’s last gold medal victory was the “Miracle on Ice” team back in 1980 at Lake Placid. The puck drops at 3:10 p.m. Eastern.

>>Americans Bates, Chock Win Silver In Ice Dance

(Milan) — The American duo of Evan Bates and Madison Chock picked up their second medal of the Winter Olympics on Wednesday. The pair finished second in the ice dance final to capture the silver medal. France won the gold, while Canada took home the bronze. The American team of Vadym Kolesnik and Emilea Zingas finished fifth. Figure skating resumes on Friday with the men’s free skate final. American Ilia Malinin, known as the “Quad God,” is a heavy favorite to win gold after topping the short program.

(Daytona Beach, FL) — The Great American Race is just around the corner. The NASCAR Cup Series kicks off the regular season with the Daytona 500 on Sunday. First, the field will square off in the Duels at Daytona on Thursday to determine race order. Ryan Preece is hoping to build on his preseason victory at Bowman Gray Stadium with a win in either of the two qualifying races.
