
According to data compiled by the Illinois Petroleum Resources Board from Illinois’ 43 oil-producing counties, Illinois crude oil production totaled 6,774,035 barrels in 2025, . This marks a slight decrease from 2024, with overall state production down 6.08 percent, or 438,162 barrels. Wayne County finished eighth with 231,247 barrels
White County continues to lead the state in oil production, reporting 2,100,336 barrels in 2025—down 100,822 barrels from 2024. White County also recorded the largest year-over-year decrease in production in the state.
The biggest increase in oil output was seen in Sangamon County, which produced 135,000 more barrels in 2025 than in 2024.
In the surrounding area, Clay County produced 244,337 barrels and ranks seventh, Marion County ranked second statewide with 676,772 barrels, while Wabash County ranked fourth with 351,965 barrels and Richland County came in 13th at 178, 599 barrels, Hamilton County was tenth at 222,005 barrels, Jefferson County 15th at 158,891, Gallatin County 16th at 111,459, Edwards County 17th at 91,193, and Saline County 24th at 21,933 barrels.
Despite some counties experiencing gains, the general trend across Illinois in 2025 was a decline in crude oil production.
