On Friday, the IHSA released the pairings for the Class 1A and Class 2A Boys Basketball Regionals. The Fairfield Mules earned the #3 Seed in the bottom half of the Monticello Class 2A Sectional and will play the winner of Effingham vs. Richland County on Wednesday, February 25th at the Vandalia Regional.
Wayne City, Cisne, and Edwards County all ended up in the top half of the Meridian Sectional and will play at the Altamont Regional. Wayne City will play St. Elmo on Monday, February 23rd while Cisne and Edwards County will face each other, also on Monday, February 23rd.
On Saturday, the Fairfield Mules were in action at the Mule Barn in a non-conference matchup against the Newton Eagles. The Mules Freshman squad got the win over the Eagles 53-35. In the JV contest, Fairfield came up just short, falling by a score of 37-35. The Varsity Mules suffered the same fate falling to the Eagles by a score of 60-45. The Mules record now drops to 17-13 on the season and they will be back in action on Tuesday at Flora.

(Inglewood, CA) — Team Stars took home the NBA All-Star Game title Sunday in Inglewood. The game was the first to feature a round robin bracket of American players against a team of international players. Team Stars beat Team World 37-35, lost 42-40 to Team Stripes before topping Team Stripes 47-21 in the championship. Anthony Edwards was voted the MVP after scoring 32 points over three games.

(Henderson, NV) — The Raiders’ coaching staff is coming together under new head coach Klint Kubiak. ESPN is reporting that Las Vegas is hiring Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko as its offensive coordinator. Janocko will reunite with Kubiak after working with him with the Seahawks, Saints and Vikings. In addition to Janocko, the Raiders officially promoted run game coordinator and defensive line coach Rob Leonard to become the team’s new defensive coordinator. The team also will reportedly retain Joe Woods as defensive pass game coordinator.

(Seattle, WA) — The Seahawks have reportedly found their offensive coordinator. Seattle will hire 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury as its OC, according to multiple reports. Fleury spent the past seven seasons with San Francisco in a variety of positions. He replaces Klint Kubiak, who was named the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders last week.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Cubs signed right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller to a two-year contract over the weekend. Miller’s deal also includes a club option for 2028. Miller is going to miss the entire 2026 season after having elbow surgery in October. Miller pitched briefly for the Northsiders in 2021. He was 4-and-3 with a 2.74 ERA and ten saves in 48 appearances between Arizona and Milwaukee last season.

(Philadelphia, PA) — A star player on the Phillies is still upset over comments made by the team’s president of baseball operations. The 33-year-old hit just .261 with 27 homers. It was the lowest average of his career since 2019.

(Atlanta, GA) — The Braves are once again behind the eight-ball. New manager Walt Weiss told the media on Sunday that Hurston Waldrep may need surgery to remove “loose bodies” in his throwing arm. The starter was dealing with discomfort following batting practice. The 23-year-old was expected to compete for a back-end of the rotation spot. Fellow starter Spencer Schwellenbach is already on the 60-day IL with elbow inflammation.

(Milan) — Team USA was held off the podium at the Winter Games on Sunday. Erin Jackson came the closest to winning a medal for the Stars and Stripes after finishing fifth in the women’s speed skating 500 meter final. Elsewhere, the US men’s curling team picked up a pair of round robin victories after topping Sweden and Norway. Team USA has five gold and 17 total medals.

(Milan) — The U.S. women’s hockey team will face Sweden on Monday with a trip to the gold medal game on the line. Team USA advanced to the semifinal round with a convincing 6-0 rout of Italy on Friday. The Americans have now outscored their opponents 26-1 so far in Milan, with the lone goal by Czechia in their tournament opener on February 5th. Canada will clash with Switzerland in the other semifinal. The two winners will then meet for gold on Thursday, while the two losers will battle for the bronze.

(Milan) — The United States is celebrating a perfect record to close out the men’s hockey group stage at the Winter Olympics. The Stars and Stripes crushed Germany 5-1 from Milan. Team captain Auston Matthews lit the lamp twice and tallied an assist on Zach Werenski’s goal. The U.S. went 3-and-0 in preliminary play and earned the two-seed in the knockout stage. Rival Canada secured the top spot after beating down France 10-2. America will face the winner of Sweden-Latvia, which takes place on Tuesday.

(Manhattan, KS) — Kansas State is moving on from its head men’s basketball coach. ESPN is reporting that the university is firing Jerome Tang for cause. The basis for the cause firing is reportedly due to language in his contract that references any activity that brings public disrepute, embarrassment, or ridicule to Kansas State. Tang had the Wildcats 1-and-11 in Big 12 play this season and last week mentioned that many of his players did not deserve to wear the K-State uniform.

(Undated) — The Kings will be without one of their top goal scorers for the rest of the season. Los Angeles forward Kevin Fiala [[ fee-A-lah ]] underwent surgery to repair fractures in his lower left leg following an injury at the Winter Olympics. Fiala suffered the injury in Switzerland’s loss to Canada last week in Italy and was immediately ruled out for the rest of the Milan Cortina tournament after being stretchered off the ice. The 29-year-old will wrap up the NHL season with 18 goals and 22 assists through 56 games played.

(Pebble Beach, CA) — Colin Morikawa secured his first PGA Tour win in over two years with a victory in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Morikawa shot a five-under 67 Sunday to finish the weekend at 22-under par. Min Woo Lee and Sepp Straka were one shot behind in a tie for second place, while Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood rounded out the top five with a score of 20-under par.
