John “Sonny” Anselment, Jr, 87, of Piopolis

87-year old John “Sonny” Anselment, Jr passed away February 18, 2026 at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born February 23, 1938 to John and Birdie (Kaufman) Anselment in Piopolis, IL.

On September 7, 1959 he married the love of his life Betty Lou Kirsch in Piopolis. They spent 66 years by each other’s side. They welcomed a son Richard and daughters Debbie and Pam to complete their family. Sonny was a farmer, first farming alongside his dad and then his son at Anselment Farms. He was so proud to be a farmer.

Sonny was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist in Piopolis where he served on the Parish Council and Holy Name Society. Sonny was a skilled wood worker. He enjoyed boating at Rend Lake and family vacations to Lake of the Ozarks.

Sonny will be missed by all who loved him especially his stubbornness, the twinkle and his eye when he was about to give Betty grief and the partnership grounded in love and adoration that he shared with Betty for so long.

Sonny is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Debra (Kent) Karcher and Pamela (John) Carrell. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren who thought the world of him: Jacquelyn (Eric) Alberter, Danielle (Lee) Hutcheson, Kacy (Rich) Furjanic, Taylor (Devon) Rapp, Jill Karcher and Remington Carrell (Stephanie Korte). More recently Sonny was blessed with 5 great grandchildren: Camdyn & Emmie Alberter and Rian, Luke & Mark Hutcheson.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents John & Birdie and his son Richard.

Memorials may be made to St. John Catholic Church and/or St. Jude.

Visitation for Sonny Anselment will be held Sunday, February 22, 2026 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Piopolis, IL. Funeral services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the church with a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass. Church doors will be open at 9:30 a.m.
