The Jefferson County Historical Society is inviting the public to hear the story of a decorated Southern Illinois veteran this weekend.

According to organizers, the program will feature Mt. Vernon resident Ted Buck and his presentation, “Story of an American Patriot.” The event is scheduled for today (February 21) at 2 p.m. at the Schweinfurth Museum.

Buck is a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel who served in Vietnam, flying numerous combat missions and earning several military honors. His decorations include two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Purple Heart, and the Legion of Merit.

In 2024, Buck was also honored by Disabled American Veterans for his service.

Organizers say one notable moment in Buck’s career included piloting a top-secret mission involving Henry Kissinger to help establish early contacts ahead of Richard Nixon’s historic trip to China.

Buck has also been active with the local DAV chapter in Mt. Vernon.

The event is free to attend, though donations are appreciated.
