Janis Kay Mitchell, 70, of Mt. Vernon, IL. passed away Friday, February 27, 2026 at SSM, Mt. Vernon, IL. Janis was born February 7, 1956 in McLeansboro, IL. She was a daughter of Jack Thomas and Mary Jo (Lenard) Thomas.
Janis was an RN. She loved gardening and interacting with her children, grandchildren and friends. She was a Methodist by faith.
Survivors include her sons Shane Emrich and wife Ambur, Mt. Vernon, IL. and Dylan Mitchell and wife Alyssa, McLeansboro, IL. A sister Debra Thomas, Dale, IL. and a brother Steven Thomas, McLeansboro, IL. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Regan McDaniel, Rylee McDaniel, Lennon Emrich, Ezekiel Sparks and Juniper Mitchell.
Janis is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Brenda Elliott and brothers Alan and Keith Thomas.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, March 6, 2026 at Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro from 5:00-7:00 p.m. followed by a service conducted by Paster Thad Galloway. A spreading of ashes will be held by the family at a later date.
