William “Bill” D. Mears, 82, of Carmi passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Hamilton Pointe in Newburgh, IN. He was born on January 21, 1944 at his family home in Gallatin County the son of Dallas and Velma Maxine (Wilson) Mears. Bill married Sandra “Sandy” Kay Brown on June 17, 1961 and they shared over 64 years of marriage together. He graduated from Carmi Township High School in 1962.
Bill worked for many different jobs before working for the City of Carmi for 30 years until he retired. He was eventually promoted to Recreational Foreman where he was responsible for the maintenance of the city’s sports fields, Burrell’s Woods, Carmi City Pool, and mowing all city property including cemeteries. Bill was also an entrepreneur because he owned and operated Danny’s Pool Room on Main Street and The Steak House on East Main. He enjoyed trap shooting so much that he started the Carmi Trap Range where he made many lifelong friends.
Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sandy Mears of Carmi; daughter, Kim (Brian) Coy of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, William (Hannah) Coy and Dale (Addyson) Coy; great-grandchildren, Rylan and Hayden Coy; nephews, Dr. Jonathan Mears and Dr. David Mears. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Tom Mears.
Funeral Services for William “Bill” D. Mears, 82, of Carmi will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, March 6, 2026 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will follow in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Visitation will be held Friday, March 6, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to White County Senior Citizens or American Legion Post #224 Baseball and will be accepted at the funeral home or can be mailed to Campbell Funeral Home, 609 W. Main St., Carmi, IL 62821.
