IHSA BOYS CLASS 2A MONTICELLO SECTIONAL:
On Wednesday, the Fairfield Mules Basketball team traveled to Monticello for a Sectional Semi-final matchup with the Tolono-Unity Rockets. The Rockets’ stifling defense, combined with the Mules struggle with turnovers, led to Tolono-Unity pulling out to a commanding 30-10 lead at halftime. The Mules were able to right the ship somewhat in the 2nd half, actually outscoring the Rockets 22-21, however Tolono-Unity’s early lead was too much to overcome as the Mules season came to a close with the 51-32 loss. The Mules were led in scoring by Jake Easton with 10 points and Owen Gruen with 9. The Fairfield Mules finish their season with a 21-12 record. Tolono-Unity moves to 31-2 and a Sectional Championship matchup Friday night with the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes, who beat Tolono-Unity earlier this season.

The St. Louis Blues picked up their second win in a row with a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena. Dylan Holloway broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the second period, and Robert Thomas added another in the third. Logan Mailloux also lit the lamp in the victory. St. Louis remains in last place in the Central Division with 55 points. The Blues visit the Sharks tomorrow night. The St. Louis Blues are getting rid of one of their top defensemen. The Blues shipped blue-liner Colton Parayko off to the Buffalo Sabres in a trade yesterday. Parayko has spent all 11 seasons of his NHL career with St. Louis. He had one goal and 13 assists in 58 games for the Blues this year.

>>Blackhawks Trade Dickinson

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Blackhawks are moving on from one of their top forwards. The team traded Jason Dickinson to the Edmonton Oilers yesterday. Chicago also sent winger Colton Dach to Edmonton, and received a 2027 first-round pick and forward Andrew Mangiapane to complete the deal. Dickinson had six goals and seven assists in 47 games with the Hawks this season.

>>Report: Patriots To Release WR Stefon Diggs

(Foxboro, MA) — The Patriots are parting ways with their top target from last season. According to ESPN, veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs will be released at the start of the 2026 league year next week. Diggs joined the Pats last offseason after signing a three-year, 69-million-dollar contract as a free agent. He led the team with 85 catches for over a thousand yards to go along with four touchdowns.

(Frisco, TX) — The Cowboys have worked their way under the salary cap before the start of the new league year. ESPN reports that Dallas has restructured the contracts of quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and left guard Tyler Smith to get under the 301.2-million-dollar salary cap. The team was nearly 55-million-dollars over the cap before the moves, but cleared around 66-million-dollars in space by reworking those contracts. While the moves create cap room this year, it will add to the players’ salary cap numbers in the future.

(Costa Mesa, CA) — The Chargers are moving on from a member of their offensive line. Los Angeles is releasing guard Mekhi Becton following one season with the team. The move saves LA 9.7-million-dollars against the salary cap after signing Becton to a two-year, 20-million-dollar deal last offseason. The 26-year-old struggled in his lone season with the team and battled through injuries that limited him to 14 starts. The Chargers also announced that veteran tight end Will Dissly and offensive tackle Savion Washington were also released.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — Aaron Rodgers is still uncertain on playing next season. That’s according to the future Hall of Famer, who told the “Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday there’s “no deadline” to make a decision. The 42-year-old spent last season with the Steelers and threw for 24 touchdowns to go with seven interceptions. Pittsburgh hired Mike McCarthy as head coach, who worked with Rodgers when both were in Green Bay.

(Orlando, FL) — Former Notre Dame football coaching legend Lou Holtz has died at the age of 89. Notre Dame athletics said in a post on X that Holtz died in Orlando, Florida surrounded by family. He entered hospice care sometime in January. The College Football Hall of Fame member earned a national title while coaching the Fighting Irish from 1986-to-1996. Holtz also coached at William and Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, South Carolina, and for one season in the NFL with the New York Jets. He later went on to become a college football analyst for ESPN.

(Undated) — The World Baseball Classic is officially underway. Australia shut out Chinese Taipei 3-0 from Tokyo on Wednesday to open pool play. Korea and Czechia are squaring off early Thursday morning while the Aussies will take their crack at the Czechs later at night. The United States begins its quest for the championship on Friday against Brazil. Mexico, Italy and Great Britain are also in America’s group.

>>Reds’ Hunter Greene Dealing With Elbow Injury

(Cincinnati, OH) — The Reds are hoping their ace avoided a serious injury. Hunter Greene left Spring Training with elbow stiffness and will have an MRI back in Cincinnati. He went 7-and-4 last season with a 2.76 ERA, but missed time with a groin injury. Greene made 26 starts the year before and was named to the National League All-Star team. He also dealt with elbow discomfort during that time in 2024.

>>Report: Sharks Sign F Sherwood To Five-Year Extension

(San Jose, CA) — The Sharks are locking up one of their top forwards with a long-term deal. ESPN is reporting that San Jose is signing Kiefer Sherwood to a five-year contract extension that has an average annual value of 5.75-million-dollars. The Sharks acquired the 30-year-old from the Vancouver Canucks in January for two second-round draft picks and minor league defenseman Cole Clayton. Sherwood has 18 goals and 25 points through 49 games played this season.

(Orlando, FL) — Russell Henley will be looking to defend his title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. Henley won last year’s tournament by one stroke after finishing atop the leaderboard at 11 under par. He will be alongside golf’s number one player Scottie Scheffler for the first and second rounds. Joel Dahmen and Daniel Bennett will be among the first pair of players teeing off the first round on Thursday.
