STATE REP. DAVE VELLA INTRODUCES BILL FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL SALES TAX HOLIDAY IN ILLINOIS

By Mark Wells Mar 5, 2026 | 11:56 AM

State Representative Dave Vella has introduced new legislation aimed at easing the financial burden on Illinois families by establishing annual back-to-school sales tax holidays. House Bill 4344 would create two tax-free periods each year, from January 1st through 7th and August 1st through 7th, during which sales taxes on clothing, school supplies, diapers, wipes, and hygiene products would be waived.

“A sales tax holiday is simple; we lower costs and put money back in people’s pockets,” said Vella. “This is about recognizing reality. January and August are expensive months for families. By lifting the sales tax on essential items, we’re making everyday necessities more affordable.”

Should the legislation pass, retailers would be required to clearly label items that qualify for the sales tax holiday. The tax-free periods could take effect as early as January 2027, giving families a break during two of the most financially demanding times of the year.
