BBB WARNS OF HOME REPAIR SCAMS AS STORM SEASON ARRIVES

The Better Business Bureau is cautioning homeowners that warmer weather and recent storms are likely to bring an increase in fraudulent schemes related to home repairs, storm damage, and door-to-door sales. The BBB urges consumers to research businesses at BBB.org and to hire local contractors to avoid scams.

COLD SNAP CAUSES LITTLE DAMAGE TO DOWNSTATE ILLINOIS CROPS

Illinois agriculture officials report that last week’s cold blast caused little or no damage to downstate crops, including peaches and winter wheat. However, with April 30th still considered the frost-free date, officials warn that crops are not out of danger yet. Early March rains may have helped offset the cold, but ongoing monitoring is needed.

ILLINOIS HOUSE APPROVES INSURANCE RATE REVIEW BILL

The Illinois House has passed legislation to create a review process for price increases in home and automobile insurance. Supporters say the bill will help consumers struggling with rising costs, while opponents argue it could drive insurers out of Illinois and reduce competition. The bill now moves to the State Senate for consideration.

STATE ATTORNEY FIRED OVER AI POLICY VIOLATION

An investigation by the Office of Executive Inspector General found that an Illinois Housing Development Authority attorney violated state policies by sending AI-related information containing sensitive data to an outside law firm. The employee’s actions broke both artificial intelligence and outside employment policies, leading to termination.
