ILLINOIS STATE POLICE UNVEIL MAJOR UPGRADES TO 9-1-1 CALL CENTERS STATEWIDE

The Illinois State Police have announced significant upgrades to 9-1-1 call centers across the state, marking a new era in emergency response technology. All 169 9-1-1 call centers in Illinois have now transitioned to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG911), replacing traditional voice-centric networks with secure, IP-based infrastructure designed to support modern communications.

Officials say the new NG911 system will provide more efficient and reliable emergency services for Illinois residents. One of the most important improvements is the shift from routing wireless 9-1-1 calls based on the location of the nearest cell tower to geospatial routing based on the caller’s actual location. This enhancement is expected to reduce delays by ensuring calls are immediately directed to the closest emergency services, rather than needing to be transferred between agencies.

NG911 also increases the reliability of emergency response through its redundant capabilities. In the event that multiple Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) are rendered inoperable—such as during severe storms or tornadoes in Southern Illinois—emergency calls can now be automatically rerouted and handled by PSAPs in other parts of the state, ensuring continued service during disasters.

The upgraded system also supports the ongoing expansion and reliability of Text-to-911, improving equitable access to emergency services for individuals who are unable to place a voice call. Looking ahead, NG911 offers the flexibility to support additional features as technology evolves, including the future potential for residents to share photos and videos with emergency dispatchers during critical situations.

Officials emphasize that these advancements underscore the state’s commitment to public safety and ensure that Illinois residents have access to the most reliable and advanced 9-1-1 services available.
