MARTIN PROMOTED TO MLB
A 2016 Graduate of Salem High School, 27-year-old Riley Martin, has been called up to the Big Leagues, where he will join the Chicago Cubs as a left-hand pitcher. Martin was originally drafted by the Cubs organization in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB draft after a successful college career at Quincy University.
He is 6’1″ and 215lbs. Martin has been in the Cubs’ minor league system for five years. He really began to show promise in 2025, when he posted a 6-2 record, a 2.69 ERA, two holds and four saves in 63 innings pitched over 47 games with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs.  He also had 80 strikeouts and recorded a 1.19 WHIP.  Martin throws a fastball that sits around 94 miles per hour, a sinker at 92, a slider around 88, and a curve and change up that comes across the plate at around 85mph.

Tre Jone led Chicago with 29 points. The Bulls are in 12th place in the Eastern Conference with a 29-and-49 record. They visit the Wizards tomorrow night.

The Pacers closed out their three-game road trip with a 117-108 loss to the Cavaliers in Cleveland. Micah Potter and Obi Toppin led the Pacers in scoring with 21 points apiece. Indiana has dropped back to back games and will host the Minnesota Timberwolves tomorrow.

The White Sox swept the Blue Jays following a 3-0 win from Chicago. Davis Martin gave up four hits and struck out half-a-dozen batters over six innings. Lenyn Sosa doubled-home a run in the third inning as Chicago has won four of its last six games. The Southsiders improved to 4-and-5. They send Grant Taylor to the mound against the Baltimore Orioles tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the fifth during a 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Ivan Herrera broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run single in the inning. Kyle Leahy earned his first win after allowing just two runs on five hits in five innings, and Riley O’Brien picked up his second save. The Cardinals improved to 5-and-4. Andre Pallante starts for St. Louis against Washington tonight.

The Chicago Cubs went 1-and-1 against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field yesterday. Miguel Amaya laced an RBI single in the top of the eighth during a 1-0 win in game one. Jacob Webb surrendered three runs in the bottom of eighth to get charged with the loss in a 6-5 defeat in the second contest. Matt Shaw, Dansby Swanson, and Ian Happ all homered in the losing effort. The 4-and-5 Northsiders send Jameson Taillon to the mound against the Rays today. The Chicago Cubs will be without one of their top starting pitchers for at least the next two weeks. The Northsiders placed Cade Horton on the 15-day injured list yesterday. He exited his start on Friday with a right forearm strain. Horton was the runner up for the NL Rookie of the Year last season. He was 1-and-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts this season.

The St. Louis Blues came through in the clutch during a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena. Robert Thomas scored the game-winning goal with under three minutes left in regulation. Thomas scored all three goals for St. Louis. The Blues are three points out of a playoff spot with 78 points. St. Louis hosts Colorado tomorrow night.

The Chicago Blackhawks scored twice in the third period during a 4-2 win over the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday. The Hawks led by just one late in the third period before Ilya Mikheyev scored an empty-netter to put the game away. Teuvo Teravainen, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Sacha Boisvert also lit the lamp in the victory. Chicago remains in last place in the Central Division with 70 points. The Blackhawks visit San Jose tonight.

>>Michigan, UConn Square Off In NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship On Monday

(Indianapolis, IN) — The stage is set for the men’s NCAA basketball tournament national championship. Number-1 Michigan squares off against second-seeded UConn from Indianapolis tonight. The Wolverines blew out Arizona in the Final Four to advance and are playing for their second-ever title after winning the March Madness tourney in 1989. The Huskies took down Illinois and will try to capture their seventh NCAA tournament trophy, which includes a chance at a third win since going back-to-back in 2023-and-24.

(Indianapolis, IN) — The three-seed Illinois Fighting Illini had their season come to an end with a 71-62 loss to two-seed UConn in the Final Four from Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday. The Illini trailed by eight at halftime and never got within on possession during the second half. Keaton Wagler scored 20 points in the losing effort, and Tomislav Ivisic chipped in with 16. Illinois finished the season with a 28-and-9 record.

(Indianapolis, IN) — Auburn topped Tulsa 92-86 in overtime to win the NIT championship at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

>>UCLA Wins NCAA WBB Title

(Phoenix, AZ) — UCLA has won its first women’s basketball NCAA title. The Bruins beat South Carolina 79-51 on Sunday to capture the championship, capping off a near-perfect 37-1 season. The 28-point margin of victory was the third-largest in a Division One women’s championship final. Center Lauren Betts was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player after the game.

>>Alabama Men’s Basketball Signs Nate Oats To New Deal

(Undated) — Alabama men’s basketball is sticking the current regime. According to ESPN, head coach Nate Oats has signed a new contract that will make him one of the five highest-paid college basketball coaches. The deal will run through the 2031-32 season. Oats has led the Crimson Tide since 2019, and has coached them to five Sweet 16 appearances over the past six years. The Tide also reached the Final Four in 2024.

>>Flagg, Mavericks Beat Lakers In Dallas

(Dallas, TX) — The Mavericks put an end to a three-game losing skid with a 134-128 win over the Los Angeles Lakers at the American Airlines Center. Cooper Flagg erupted for a game-high 45 points and dished out nine assists as the Mavs improved to 25-and-53. LeBron James led the way with 30 points and 15 assists for the injury-depleted Lakers. Jaxson Hayes scored 23 points off the bench as LA fell to 50-and-28.

>>Islanders Fire Head Coach Patrick Roy

(Elmont, NY) — The Islanders are shaking things up before the end of the regular season. General manager Mathieu Darche announced Sunday that Patrick Roy [[ wah ]] was fired as head coach. Peter DeBoer has been named the replacement with four games left in the regular season. According to ESPN, DeBoer’s deal extends past this season. New York has 89 points after dropping four straight games and will host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday in Elmont.

(Philadelphia, PA) — The Flyers edged the Bruins 2-1 in overtime from Philly. Porter Martone scored his first-career goal on a 5-on-3 advantage to end the game. Christian Dvorak scored in regulation as Philly has won back-to-back games and is now third in the Metropolitan Division. Pavel Zacha netted the lone goal for Boston, which has dropped three straight and remains in the first Wild Card spot in the East.

>>Pirates Blow Out Orioles

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Pirates beat the Orioles 8-2 to secure a home sweep. Ryan O’Hearn went two-for-five with a home run and four RBIs for Pittsburgh, while O’Neill Cruz went two-for-four with a homer and three RBIs of his own. Braxton Ashcraft allowed a run and struck out eight batters to earn the win on the mound. The Pirates have won five games in a row to improve to 6-and-3 this season. Taylor Ward went three-for-four with a double in the Baltimore setback. Chris Bassitt allowed six runs over two innings, getting the loss. The Orioles fell to 3-and-6 with the loss.

(San Antonio, TX) — JJ Spaun is celebrating a victory after finishing atop the leaderboard at the Valero Texas Open from TPC San Antonio. Spaun finished the tournament 17 under par for his second career Texas Open win. Matt Wallace, Michael Kim and Robert MacIntyre finished in a three-way tie for second place at 16 under. Defending champion Brian Harman was tied with several others for 39th at five under par.

(Bristol, TN) — The NASCAR Cup Series returns next weekend. The field battles in the Food City 500 from Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee next Sunday. Chase Elliott hopes to carry momentum from last weekend’s win at Martinsville. The driver of the Number-9 car sits fourth in the standings following his Cook Out 400 victory. Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin make up the top-three while William Byron sits fifth.
