Thomas E. Smith 81, of McLeansboro, Illinois passed away Sunday, April 5, 2026 at Silver Fox Senior Living and Rehab in McLeansboro, IL. Thomas was born August 14, 1944 in Davenport, Iowa to Noel Smith and Margaret L. (Cross) Smith. On August 18, 1973 he married Vera (Thompson) Smith at the Dale Christian Church in Dale, IL. and she survives.
Thomas was a protestant by faith. He loved working, fishing and playing pool. Thomas was a roustabout for Stewart Producers.
Survivors include his wife Vera, Grandchildren Laura Wankum and husband Tom, St. Louis, Mo., Josh Penrod, Sarah Normansell and husband Zac and Anne Marie Anderson and fiancé Gabe, Fairfield, IL. Great grandchildren Capriyel Wankum, Delezar Wankum, Kayden Robbins, Mason Robbins and Liam Aldridge. Brothers Dale Smith, Chicago, IL. Jr. Smith and wife Deanna, Fairfield, IL. and Alan Smith, Florida. Also surviving is a daughter-in-law Erica Penrod, Fairfield, IL.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a son James William Penrod, brothers Ronnie Smith, Bill Smith and Richard Smith and a sister Mary Horn.
Visitation for Thomas E. Smith will be Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro, IL. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Andy May will officiate the services. Burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery, McLeansboro, IL.
Memorials are requested for the Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
