ILLINOIS FARMERS BEGIN PLANTING AS USDA RELEASES FIRST CROP PROGRESS REPORT OF THE SEASON

Planting season is officially underway across parts of Illinois, according to the first weekly crop progress and condition report issued Monday afternoon.

The USDA reported that as of April 5th, an estimated 1% of Illinois corn had been planted, which is on pace with the five-year average. Data for soybean planting will be included in next week’s report.

During the week ending April 5th, farmers had 2.1 days suitable for fieldwork. The statewide average temperature was 59.1 degrees, marking an increase of 11.3 degrees above normal. Average precipitation was 2.23 inches, which is 1.53 inches above the usual amount.

Topsoil moisture was rated at 5% very short, 16% short, 62% adequate, and 17% surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions were reported as 15% very short, 29% short, 51% adequate, and 5% surplus.

Winter wheat condition across the state was rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 24% fair, 62% good, and 10% excellent.
