Open enrollment has ended, but uninsured Illinoisans still have a new opportunity to get covered through the state’s Tax Time Easy Enrollment program. This innovative initiative allows residents to start the process of obtaining health insurance while filing their annual state taxes.
With the April 15th tax filing deadline approaching, Get Covered Illinois is encouraging individuals who need coverage to utilize this new option. When filling out the IL-1040 tax form, residents should check the Health Insurance box on line 42 and indicate which household members require insurance. The Illinois Department of Revenue will then share relevant information, such as income and household size, with Get Covered Illinois.
After filing, residents will receive a notice outlining their projected eligibility for health coverage, including possible qualification for premium tax credits or Medicaid. If eligible for Marketplace insurance, individuals have 60 days from the date on the notice to apply and enroll in a health plan. Importantly, checking the box does not affect the filer’s tax return and does not require any commitment to enroll.
In addition, residents who experience life changes such as loss of health coverage, marriage, or the birth of a child may qualify for a special enrollment period. This year, Illinois added pregnancy as a qualifying life event for coverage.
