New details have been released about Mt. Vernon’s highly anticipated indoor recreation center, with city officials announcing a nearly $31 million price tag and an expected opening in May 2028.

City Manager Nathan McKenna said the project’s estimated cost stands at $30,891,453, with funding already underway after the city issued a $30 million bond in January. The remaining costs will be covered by home rule sales tax revenue.

The 54,687-square-foot facility will feature two full-size basketball courts—convertible for volleyball and pickleball—an indoor aquatic area with a zero-entry leisure pool, children’s play structure, waterslide, and four lap lanes. Amenities will also include a birthday party room, child watch area, community room, and office space for the parks department. City officials are also considering expansions to the aquatics area.

A market study by Ballard King & Associates projects the center will operate at a deficit, with annual expenses between $1.6 million and $2 million, and revenue between $1.2 million and $1.5 million. To help bridge the gap, the city plans to use local cannabis tax revenue to support ongoing operations.

The project remains in the design phase, with detailed plans for the building’s interior and exterior still being finalized. City leaders have long discussed the recreation center as a means to enhance amenities, attract visitors, and boost quality of life in Mt. Vernon.
