The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging residents to avoid eating largemouth bass caught from select southern Illinois lakes, including SIU Carbondale’s Campus Lake, due to contamination concerns. Recent testing revealed dangerous levels of “forever chemicals” and other harmful substances, such as methylmercury, in the fish.
Health officials warn that these contaminants are associated with serious health risks. In addition to the targeted warning for largemouth bass, a statewide advisory for methylmercury in all fish remains in effect. Officials recommend that consumption of other fish species from the affected waters be limited to once a month.
Residents are encouraged to consult the state’s fish advisory map before eating any locally caught fish to stay informed about ongoing health advisories.
