A 21-year-old Centralia man, Shavonte Samuels, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and six additional felony charges in Marion County Court following the Sunday afternoon shooting of three people in the 900 block of East Kell in Centralia.
Samuels faces a first-degree murder charge related to the shooting death of 19-year-old Steven McCary. Because a firearm was used in the crime, Samuels could face a maximum sentence of natural life in prison if convicted. McCary was transported to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia, where he was later pronounced dead.

In addition, Samuels is charged with two Class X counts of attempted first-degree murder for the shootings of Lorenzo Williams, who was shot in the abdomen, and Aaryanna Jackson, who was grazed by a bullet in the hair. Both Williams and Jackson received treatment at St. Mary’s Hospital and were later released. Four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm were filed—one for each of the three victims, and a fourth for shooting into an occupied building in the 900 block of East Kell. Samuels is also charged with aggravated battery in connection with the shooting of Williams, as well as unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon for having a handgun in his possession.

Samuels is currently being held at the Marion County Jail without bond, pending a hearing on April 29th to determine if the no-bond status will remain. His attorney, Dennis Hatch, requested a delay in proceedings to allow more time to review evidence in the case.

During his court appearance, Samuels confirmed to Judge Ericka Sanders that he understood each of the charges and the potential penalties.
