On Wednesday, the Lady Mules Track team took 2nd at the Lady Bulldogs Invitational at Carmi. Notable individual performers for the Lady Mules were: Remi Taylor-2nd in 400m; Emeri Sager-2nd in 800m and 3rd in 1600m; Emily Vaughan-1st in 300m Hurdles; Mahogany Langford-3rd in Shot Put; Jensyn Robbins-2nd in Long Jump; and the 4x800m Relay Team took 1st. Cisne’s Ashtyn Smith took 2nd in the Triple Jump and 5th in the Long Jump.

On Wednesday, the Mules Boys Tennis team fell to Marion 9-0 at the Lakeside Tennis Courts.
EDWARDS COUNTY’S GRACE BISHOP SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT TO PLAY SOFTBALL AT LAKE LAND COLLEGE:
Edwards County High School Senior, Grace Bishop has signed a letter of intent with Lake Land College in Mattoon to play Softball next year. Bishop currently has 35 career home runs for the Lady Lions. Bishop is also an All-Time Leading Scorer in Lady Lions Basketball history.

The St. Louis Cardinals suffered a series loss against the Miami Marlins. St. Louis lost the rubber match 4-1 from LoanDepot Park yesterday. Ivan Herrera homered in the losing effort, while Kyle Leahy was charged with his third loss of the season after surrendering four runs on eight hits in five innings. The Cardinals fell to 14-and-10. They return home to host the Mariners tomorrow.

The Cubs and Phillies are streaking in opposite directions. The Cubbies took down the Phils 7-2 from Wrigley Field. Seiya Suzuki bashed a two-run homer while Michael Busch also went deep. Chicago has won eight straight. The Northsiders are in second place in the NL Central with a 15-and-9 record. They send Edward Cabrera to the mound against Philadelphia this afternoon.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — One of the most anticipated events of the NFL offseason is finally here. Round one of the draft kicks off from Pittsburgh tonight. The Raiders hold the top selection and are expected to take Indiana quarterback and Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza first-overall. The QB-desperate Jets hold the next pick and are likely to nab a top defensive player as most experts consider this a “one quarterback” draft. The Cardinals, Titans and Giants round out the top-five selections in Round One. The next two rounds take place on Friday while four-through-seven cap-off the three-day event on Saturday.

(Frisco, TX) — The Cowboys are not planning on having any long-term contract discussions with star wide receiver George Pickens. Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones said that the team is set to have Pickens play out the 2026 season on the franchise tag and informed his agent of the decision last week. The Cowboys placed the non-exclusive 27.3-million-dollar franchise tag on Pickens in March and would have had to sign him to a long-term deal by a July 15th deadline. The 25-year-old had 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

(Undated) — Alabama football rewarded its head coach with a big deal. The university announced Wednesday that it has reached an agreement on a new seven-year contract with Kalen DeBoer that will pay him 12.5-million-dollars per season. The new deal expires on January 31st, 2033 and extended DeBoer’s previous contract by two years. It also includes a buyout of 10-million-dollars through January 31st, 2027, and it decreases by two-million-dollars after each of the next two years.

(Gainesville, FL) — One of the best defensive tackles in the upcoming NFL draft is on the mend. ESPN reports Caleb Banks is “on pace” to be fully cleared for football activities in early June. The former Florida lineman is recovering from a surgically repaired bone in his left foot. Banks is considered one of the top-five defensive tackles in this year’s draft class.

(Undated) — Another day of NBA playoff action is in the books. The Detroit Pistons put together a dominant third quarter that led them to a 98-83 home victory over the Orlando Magic in Game Two. The series is now tied 1-1 heading to Florida. Out west, the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder held on for a 120-107 home win over the Phoenix Suns. The Thunder now lead the series 2-0. The action continues tonight with a trio of Game Threes. The Atlanta Hawks host the New York Knicks, the Toronto Raptors entertain the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves play host to the Denver Nuggets.

(Undated) — Another member of the Spurs is bringing home some hardware this season. The NBA announced that San Antonio forward Keldon Johnson has been named the Sixth Man of the Year. Johnson joins Manu Ginobili as the only other San Antonio player to win the award after becoming the first Spur in franchise history to score at least 1,000 points off the bench in a season. He beat out Miami’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Denver’s Tim Hardaway Jr. for the award. The NBA will reveal the winner of the Sportsmanship Award on Thursday.

(Undated) — The Stanley Cup Playoffs continued with a trio of games on Wednesday. The Philadelphia Flyers took a commanding 3-0 lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 5-2 home win. Cutter Gauthier scored two goals to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 6-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers to even that series at a game apiece. Wyatt Johnston scored a power play goal in double overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild and a two games to one lead in the series. The postseason continues with three more games tonight. The Boston Bruins will host the Buffalo Sabres, the Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes will face off north of the border and the Los Angeles Kings will play the Colorado Avalanche at home.

(Kansas City, MO) — The Royals have made a decision on their future ballpark. Kansas City is partnering with Hallmark Cards on a three-billion-dollar project that includes a mixed-use development with a new ballpark as its centerpiece in the downtown Crown Center area. Royals owner John Sherman said that the 1.9-billion-dollar stadium will break ground next year in the middle of Crown Center as part of the first phase of an 85-acre project. Two-thirds of the funding will come from private sources and the remaining one-third from public partners.

(Indianapolis, IN) — The Fever have a plan to protect their star player. Caitlin Clark said Wednesday that they need to find somebody else that can handle the ball a little bit. Clark led the WNBA in assists during her rookie year, but was limited to just 13 games due to injuries last season. Head coach Stephanie White hopes that recent draft pick Raven Johnson can help alleviate some of that pressure on Clark. Indiana visits the New York Liberty in its preseason opener on Saturday.

(Avondale, LA) — The pairing of Ben Griffin and Andrew Novak will be looking to defend their title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Griffin and Novak won last year’s tournament after finishing atop the leaderboard at 28 under par. The duo will be teeing off alongside the pair of Wyndham Clark and Taylor Moore for the first and second rounds. The tournament begins with Jason Dufner and Austin Cook teeing off round one with Sam Stevens and Zach Bauchou.
