Homelessness has become an increasing concern across the nation, and the issue is also impacting communities throughout Southern Illinois.
Recent figures indicate more than 1,200 individuals in the region are experiencing homelessness, with a reported 25 percent increase in housing insecurity over the past year. Economic challenges are contributing to the problem, with an estimated 40 percent of families facing eviction.
In Wayne County, the situation is further complicated by what officials describe as “hidden homelessness.” Approximately 75 percent of individuals experiencing homelessness are living in unstable or temporary situations, making them difficult to identify and assist. Additionally, about 65 percent of individuals seeking emergency shelter in rural Illinois are placed on waiting lists, underscoring a shortage of available resources and support services.
The issue will be the focus of discussion this (Thursday) morning on Morning Mingle at 9 a.m. on WFIW-FM 104.9. Angel Maguire of Fairfield will join host Mark Wells to talk about a new program she is leading in the Fairfield area aimed at addressing homelessness and housing insecurity in Southern Illinois.
Maguire is also expected to outline her vision for establishing a homeless shelter in Fairfield as part of ongoing efforts to provide additional support for those in need. The program will also be streamed live online at wfiwradio.com
