The U.S. Department of Justice has launched investigations into 36 Illinois public school districts, including several in Southern Illinois, to review policies related to classroom content and student access.
According to the department’s Civil Rights Division, the investigations will examine whether districts are including instruction related to sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms. If such material is being taught, officials will also review whether parents have been properly notified of their right to opt their children out.
Among the districts named are Bluford Unit School District 318, Odin Public School District 722, Buncombe Consolidated School District 43, Lick Creek Community Consolidated School District 16, and Tamaroa School District 5.
The investigation will also assess whether districts are complying with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, including policies governing access to single-sex spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms, as well as participation in girls’ sports.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said the goal is to ensure parents are informed about classroom instruction and can make decisions regarding their children’s education.
Officials emphasized that no conclusions have been reached at this time, and the investigations remain ongoing. The department has not provided a timeline for when findings may be released, but noted the review will also consider whether districts are following legal precedents related to parental rights in education.
