Legendary Illinois high school basketball coach Ron Felling has died.

Felling is best known for his 16-year run at Lawrenceville High School, where he led the Indians to four state championships in 1972, 1974, 1982, and 1983, along with a third-place finish in 1976. His teams made five state tournament appearances, compiling a 14-1 record, including back-to-back undefeated 34-0 seasons in 1982 and 1983.

During his coaching career at Lawrenceville, Felling posted a winning percentage of more than 83 percent while capturing 12 regional titles, seven sectional championships, and five super-sectional titles.

After leaving Lawrenceville, Felling joined Indiana University as an assistant coach under Bobby Knight. During his time there, the Hoosiers won four Big Ten titles, reached two Final Fours, and claimed the 1987 national championship.

Known as the “Shooter’s Coach,” Felling was respected for teaching shooting fundamentals and mentoring countless players and coaches throughout the region.

A mural honoring his accomplishments was created in downtown Lawrenceville in recent years.

Funeral arrangements for Ron Felling are pending.
