Gas prices in Southern Illinois have climbed sharply in recent weeks, placing the region among the most expensive in the state for fuel.

According to AAA, the Carbondale–Marion metro area is averaging $4.97 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline as of Wednesday. That is a significant jump from $4.48 one week ago and $4.29 one month ago. Diesel prices in the region are also elevated, averaging $5.95 per gallon.

Across Illinois, the statewide average for regular unleaded stands at $4.98 per gallon, compared to the national average of $4.53. AAA data shows Illinois prices remain higher than several neighboring states, including Kentucky at $4.31, Missouri at $4.12, and Indiana at $4.75.

In the Chicago area, prices have also spiked in recent days, with some stations reportedly exceeding $6 per gallon. Analysts attribute the increase to rising crude oil prices, global supply concerns, and ongoing uncertainty tied to conflict in the Middle East.

Drivers in Illinois are also expected to see further increases later this year. The Illinois Department of Revenue has announced that the state’s motor fuel tax will rise again on July 1st as part of its annual inflation adjustment tied to the Consumer Price Index. The gasoline tax is set to increase from 48.3 cents per gallon to 49.6 cents per gallon beginning July 1st

While Illinois continues to rank among the states with the highest fuel-related taxes, some neighboring states are taking steps to ease costs. Indiana recently extended a gasoline sales tax suspension and temporarily paused its state gas tax, a move officials say could save drivers nearly 60 cents per gallon over the next month. Kentucky leaders have also considered temporary relief measures as fuel prices continue to rise.
