Visitors hoping to take in the elevated views from Trigg Tower in Shawnee National Forest will soon need to make alternative plans. The popular observation tower, located north of IL-147 near Simpson, Illinois, is scheduled to close temporarily later this month as crews undertake a series of important safety repairs and maintenance projects.

According to forest officials, work is expected to begin on May 11, weather permitting. The closure will affect both Trigg Tower and its parking area. While the repairs are projected to take about one month, officials note the closure could last up to 90 days if additional work is required or weather causes delays.

The upcoming repairs will include replacing fencing at the top observation platform, installing new deck boards and stair treads, stabilizing the lower staircase, and sandblasting and repainting the structure. Additional maintenance may also be addressed during the closure period.

Officials are urging all visitors to respect posted closures and avoid the site while construction is underway.

Originally constructed as a wildfire watch tower, Trigg Tower has become a year-round destination for hikers and sightseers, offering panoramic views of the surrounding forest. The temporary closure aims to improve safety and preserve the site for future visitors.

For updates on the status of the project and reopening dates, visitors are encouraged to check with the Shawnee National Forest before planning their trips.
