State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) is calling on the Illinois Department of Corrections to provide an immediate tour of the Robinson Correctional Center and Lawrence Correctional Center following a reported inmate overdose and death at the Robinson facility over the weekend.
Niemerg said the incident highlights ongoing concerns about illegal drugs entering Illinois prisons and renewed his call for policy changes within the Department of Corrections.
“This is not acceptable when people in the custody of the State of Illinois continue to die,” Niemerg said in a statement. “They cannot keep drugs out of prisons and as a result we see another overdose and a death. For the health of the inmates and especially the staff changes must be made.”
As of Monday, officials had not released the name of the inmate or additional details surrounding the reported overdose death.
