A rural Mt. Vernon mobile home sustained heavy damage after a fire broke out early Tuesday night, but the residents managed to escape unharmed.

According to Jefferson Fire officials, the blaze occurred at a home on Vonna Lane in the 15,000 block of East Nolan. The fire was initially reported as smoke coming from a stove, but firefighters arrived to find a dryer burning in the hallway. The fire destroyed about a third of the trailer, while the remaining sections suffered significant heat and smoke damage.

The Lane family, who were home at the time, escaped without injury. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Multiple fire departments responded to the scene for mutual aid, including Mt. Vernon City, Weber Township, Ewing Northern, and Benton. Wayne City and Woodlawn fire crews stood by at the Jefferson Fire station to provide coverage in case of additional emergencies.

The fire was first reported at 5 p.m. on Monday, and fire crews remained on scene for approximately two hours.
