During Monday night’s Grayville City Council meeting, a new season at the Grayville City Pool will begin May 23rd with several upgrades and improvements already completed. Sharon Walden said city crews have repainted the inside of the pool facility, relocated the concession stand, added new furniture and continue preparing for opening day. Walden said officials expect nearly 200 children to attend opening day activities and are still seeking sponsors for free swim Sundays.

Walden said sponsorships cost $150, with two sponsors accepted for each Sunday event. She also noted the pool is looking for additional lifeguards for the summer season.

Mason Siegel presented the April police report, which included 213 calls for service, 23 investigations, six arrests and four citations. Siegel also announced Officer Zach Coale is leaving the department after accepting another position elsewhere. Coale had served with the department for about one year.

Following executive session, council members approved placing three city lots up for sealed bid. Bids will be accepted until June 19th at 3 p.m.

Council members also continued discussions regarding utility shutoff procedures and landlord responsibilities after concerns over more than $80,000 in unpaid utility balances. City Attorney and Finance Commissioner Jay Walden said officials are still in the early stages of reviewing possible policy changes.

New business consumed more than an hour of the meeting. A tax increment financing request involving Bailes Pure Drop was tabled after council members requested additional paperwork and financial information.

Council members approved a road closure request for the Friends of Grayville Hog Roast and tabled discussion regarding security cameras for the library and park.

Animal ordinance concerns generated another lengthy discussion after resident DeeAndra Martin addressed the council regarding a dispute involving her family cat and a neighbor. Walden said portions of the current ordinance may need further review. No action was taken on the matter.

The meeting concluded with approval of a special liquor license request for Chappy’s for a cornhole tournament scheduled May 30th.
