USDA ANNOUNCES UPDATED SNAP RETAILER STOCKING REQUIREMENTS

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced new stocking requirements for retailers participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP.

Under the updated rule, stores authorized to accept SNAP benefits must carry seven varieties of items across four staple food categories: protein, grains, dairy, and fruits and vegetables. Officials say the changes are designed to increase access to nutritious foods and close loopholes that previously allowed some snack foods to count toward minimum stocking requirements.

According to the USDA, the updated standards more than double previous food variety requirements and place a greater emphasis on whole and perishable foods.

Since the beginning of the Trump Administration, the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service says it has taken action involving nearly 3,200 retailers for failing to meet or maintain SNAP stocking standards. Violations can result in stores losing authorization to accept SNAP benefits.

Brooke Rollins said the changes are intended to improve food quality available through nutrition assistance programs, while Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the rule focuses on improving nutrition and accountability within the SNAP program.

The updated requirements are scheduled to take effect in fall 2026, with additional guidance for retailers expected in the coming weeks.
