TORRENTIAL RAINFALL CAUSES FLOODING ACROSS CLAY COUNTY AND SURROUNDING AREAS

Torrential rainfall Monday led to flooding problems in Clay County and areas to the north and west. Flora recorded 3.25 inches of rain, Louisville 3.44 inches, Clay City 1.34 inches, Iuka 2.43 inches, Effingham County 3.5 inches, Salem 2.65 inches, and Centralia 2.39 inches. In contrast, WFIW Studios east of Fairfield saw just 0.13 inches, while Cisne recorded 0.39 inches.

The National Weather Service has issued a River Flood Warning for the Little Wabash below Clay City, predicting the river to crest at 22.1 feet Wednesday morning, well above the 18-foot flood stage.

Here’s the current river stages according to the US Geological Survey. Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 18.25 feet (flood stage is at 17 ft.) . The Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 9.32 feet, (flood stage is 15 ft). The Little Wabash at Main St. in Carmi is at 15.59 feet, (flood stage is at 27 ft.). The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 10.74 feet, (flood stage is at 19 ft.). The Bonpas Creek at Browns is at 2.74 feet. Ohio River at Old Shawneetown IL-KY State line is 18.17 feet, (flood stage is at 33 ft.)
