The U.S. Department of Transportation has chosen American Airlines to provide Essential Air Service at Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois in Marion, marking a significant boost for regional air travel.
The newly awarded two-year contract will run from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2028. Under the agreement, American Airlines will offer 12 weekly round-trip flights between Marion and Chicago O’Hare International Airport, using 65-seat regional jet aircraft.
Airport officials had endorsed American Airlines’ proposal earlier this year, citing the airline’s larger aircraft capacity, increased available seats, projected passenger growth, and the lowest-cost bid submitted to the Department of Transportation.
“This is the greatest air service opportunity we have had through the Essential Air Service program over the last 17 years,” said Airport Director Doug Kimmel in a statement. He described the addition of American Airlines as “a game changer for Southern Illinois air service,” noting the benefits of the airline’s global network and greater passenger capacity.
The new service is expected to more than double current seating capacity at Veterans Airport and substantially expand travel options for passengers throughout Southern Illinois.
Airport leaders had strongly advocated for the American Airlines proposal during the selection process, which included bids from several competing airlines. Ultimately, American Airlines was selected for offering the highest projected passenger totals at the lowest subsidy cost to the federal government.
The first American Airlines flights from Marion to Chicago O’Hare are scheduled to begin August 1.
