The National Weather Service says the region could see multiple rounds of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms beginning today and continuing through the Memorial Day weekend.
Forecasters are predicting widespread showers across southern Illinois, with average rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches expected through the middle of next week. Localized areas could receive even higher amounts due to heavy downpours and repeated storms moving over the same locations.
Meteorologists say there is a strong likelihood that at least one inch of rain will fall across much of the area by the end of the holiday weekend.
Minor localized flooding remains a concern, especially along smaller creeks, streams, and low-lying areas. Weather officials said they will continue monitoring rainfall totals and the potential for additional flooding issues as the system develops.
Saturday is expected to provide a brief break from the wet weather for many areas before more widespread precipitation returns Sunday and continues into early next week.
Despite the unsettled conditions, temperatures are expected to remain seasonable, with daytime highs generally in the 70s and overnight lows in the 60s. Some locations could see temperatures briefly reach the lower 80s.
