Former Republican strategist Collin Corbett filed petitions Tuesday to run for Illinois governor as an independent candidate, saying he hopes to bring more balance and bipartisanship to state government.
Corbett, of Palatine and founder of Cor Strategies, submitted approximately 37,000 signatures to the Illinois State Board of Elections. He recently left the Republican Party, citing concerns over immigration policies and increasing political division.
Corbett criticized both President Donald Trump and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, saying voters are tired of political fighting and want practical solutions.
Corbett selected Carolyn Schofield as his running mate for lieutenant governor.
Under Illinois law, independent statewide candidates must submit at least 25,000 valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. Petition challenges may be filed through June 2nd.
Corbett’s campaign has reported raising about $40,000 since May 1st. Republican candidate Darren Bailey criticized the independent campaign, while Pritzker’s campaign declined comment.
