The Wayne County Sheriff’s Merit Commission is now accepting applications to update its hiring list for the position of Patrol Deputy. Applications are available at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and must be submitted by the close of business on June 19th.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old, possess a valid state-issued driver’s license, be a high school graduate or equivalent, and have no felony or criminal convictions that would prevent firearm ownership. A thorough background check is required. All applicants must complete the POWER (Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report) test, scheduled for June 20, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Those who pass will be invited to a written examination at a later date.

Holidays: 14 paid holidays annually, with an extra holiday in general election years
Wages: Starting hourly wage of $24.16 as of December 1, 2025
Lateral Transfer: Experienced officers may be eligible for transfer with up to 10 years of service without attending the Illinois Police Academy

Pension: Full-time position includes participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund SLEP benefit
Vacation/Comp Time: Up to 5 weeks vacation based on years of service; comp time available

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office serves approximately 16,000 residents across 713 square miles and maintains a jail facility with a 34-inmate capacity, while also providing security for the Wayne County Courthouse.
